Segni City of Art
There are many places to visit in Segni, from religious ones to archaeological sites and noblemen's palaces.
Segni has numerous archaeological sites of notable importance. The circuit of walls in large polygonal blocks of limestone are still intact and viable thanks to the pedestrian paths alongside it. Along the length of the entire wall many doors open, and amongst these is the most famous and the symbol of the city: the Saracen door.
The vast architectural complex of the Acropolis is without doubt one of the most beautiful archaeological sites of the ancient city. The structures of the temple stand out for their majesty, dedicated to the goddess Juno Moneta (2nd century BC.), now incorporated into the church of San Pietro, one of the sacred architectural jewels of Segni. Created together with the temple (with the famous opus signinum technique) is the nearby large circular tub, the Roman Cistern, at the time intended to supply water to the city.
In today's Piazza Santa Maria, where the Co-Cathedral opens up now was the site of the Forum, the hub of the political, social and economic community. In an area adjacent to the Forum, in the late first century BC, a huge cryptoporticus was built which today can be partially seen along via Lauri.
One of the most beautiful monuments in the city and of outstanding interest is the nymph. Still visible is the rich mosaic decoration that covers the walls of this ancient monumental fountain.
To these famous and extraordinary building complexes of an urban nature, thanks to recent investigations, new archaeological finds have emerged in the nearby valley of Sacco amongst them all it is worth noting the area at Colle Noce.
Of particular interest are the traces left from the intensive building activity that marked the rebirth of the city at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth century: besides the ancient council building, which today houses the Museum, one can admire the bell tower of the Co-Cathedral and many other buildings that are not inside the historic centre.
The Co-Cathedral which was rebuilt in the seventeenth century and dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption is particularly rich in works of art that make it one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the province of Lazio. In this church the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas was beatified and Bruno who was Bishop of Segni from 1079 to 1123 was sanctified.
Other religious monuments of interest are the aforementioned Church of San Pietro, the Church of St. Stefano erected in the square of the same name, with a beautiful Romanesque bell tower that rises four floors, and the Church of Jesus, built in the first decade of the eighteenth century on the orders of the fathers of doctrine.
Many of these monuments have been declared by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture as "monuments of great historic, artistic and archaeological heritage".
Thanks to the splendour of these magnificent works, and the presence of the beautiful archaeological museum as well as the active presence of libraries and archives, such as the ecclesiastical one entitled Innocent III, Segni currently boasts the title of "City of Art" .
